John Stott

I picked up a book at Regent College's book store yesterday; it is dedicated to J.I. Packer and his thoughts, work and theology. Here is my most favorite quote of the first 6 pages!

"Our first and fundamental conviction about Christian theology then, is that it is a response to divine revelation. For we would know nothing about God if he had not taken the initiative to make himself known. Without revelation theology would inevitably degenerate into idolatry, since there would be no criterion by which to distinguish between true and false images of God. But the biblical revelation protects us from idolatry. True, it also imposes limits on our belief, yet in this limitation lies liberty. For the truth sets us free from bondage to fad and fashion, folly and falsehood."
